Merkel, Hitler – same difference?

Every time Giertych senior opens his mouth something nasty comes out of it.

“Germans have been trying to dominate Europe for a thousand years”, Maciej Giertych, MEP told a Polish TV channel. He believes the present German chancellor is “trying to do the same, but using different methods".

Bad hair cut Merkel an equivalent to Hitler? Surly some mistake?

“Hitler’s methods were completely different, but I’m talking about a chain of actions taken by Germany over decades”, he explains.

Whereas Hitler used the Luftwaffe, Merkel is using the EU to bulldoze its way through Europe to dominate the continent in a demonstration of the Nietzschian will to power, perhaps?

“Mr. Giertych badly needs medical help. Germany has been implementing the democratic state principle for 40 years and we have a great chance for an advantageous alliance with them, yet such comments may destroy everything,” says MEP Dariusz Rosati.

Besides Giertych is not really being a threat to anything – the guy is increasingly an isolated eccentric on his last legs as a politician - may be medical help wouldn’t actually help him much at all. Giertych’s is an ideological sickness, a virus caused by his determination, as I have pointed out before, to live in the time of the great Polish nationalists such as his hero Roman Dmowski – way back in the 1930s. He loved the guy so much he named his son after him.

I don't know if anyone knows the answer to this question or where I should look--What kinds of restrictions are there on campaign contributions by Polish citizens living outside of Poland? I think it's about time someone started something like MoveOn.org to get the Kaczynskis out of office and it'd be a lot easier to do with financing in pounds and dollars from Polish ex-pats.

Far as I understand it there is a complete ban on foreign contributions for funding for funding political parties. Was Moveon.com directly connected to the Democrats?

You are at liberty to start up a campaigning web site of course. There was one down in Krakow...although it appeared to support SLD etc...

A missing component of the political culture in Poland seems to be a lack of people prepared to stand up and challenge the mindless actions of the lunatic fringe. Even at this early stage of development there should be something of a sense of duty to marginalize these idiots.

I fully expect to see some freshly agitated earth on Roman Dmowski grave attesting to his rolling over in his grave at the mere notion that these crazies are now representing his political view point which I believe they don’t even really comprehend.

But there in lies the problem. PO has had so many oppurtunities to rip PiS and "LiS" to shreds, but as far as i understand form my linguistic isolation, they have failed to do so.

So you do not think that Dmowski-ism is a dead ideology not suited to the 21st century?

Strange...

It’s dead!

It’s an ideological position that wouldn’t sell in Poland in this day an age (it didn’t sell that well in the 1930’s). A Polish version of fascism something closer to Franco in Spain than Mussolini or Hitler.

Dmowski wasn’t that crazy about religion but came to the conclusion that Catholicism was key to a Polish identity and therefore he integrated it into his ideology. He was very intense about being a modernizer and getting Poles to stops thinking in terms of the past and their traditions, and focus on the modernization of society as Poland’s best solution to advancement. He also pushes a concept of exclusivity where Poles would be assured of dominance, in what in his time was a diverse society.

Now here’s the strange part, the Giertych clan has used his name and the religious component of his ideology, ignoring most of the rest. So our lunatic fringe is making it up as they go.
